How is Brașov preparing to welcome Europe’s young athletes for the European Youth Olympic Festival, scheduled to take place from 14 to 21 February 2027? Representatives of the National Olympic Committees are finding out all the details at the Chefs de Mission Seminar, which began today at the Aro Palace Hotel.
Delegates from 38 National Olympic Committees are present in Brașov, while representatives of another 11 are taking part online, discussing directly with the organisers the conditions and services prepared for athletes and their teams.
The opening session featured speeches by Mihai Covaliu, President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, Bogdan Matei, President of the National Agency for Sport, and the hosts of the meeting: George Scripcaru, Mayor of Brașov and President of the Organising Committee; Dan Ghiță, Deputy Mayor and coordinator of Brașov EYOF 2027; and Alina Nicoară, Executive Director of the Organising Committee.
Representing the European Olympic Committees (EOC), messages were delivered by Damir Stajner, Chair of the Coordination Commission for Brașov EYOF 2027, Commission member Agne Vanagiene, and EOC Sports Director Peter Brull.
The managers responsible for each organisational area then presented the current stage of preparations and answered questions from the delegates. The shared objective is clear: every team should know what to expect and be able to prepare its participation in Brașov EYOF 2027 as effectively as possible.
Positive feedback after the first day of the Seminar
Throughout the day, the organising team presented representatives of the National Olympic Committees with updates on the services prepared for the delegations, including registration and accreditation, transport, accommodation and catering, protocol, medical and anti-doping services, volunteers and safeguarding, IT and technology, marketing, ceremonies, programme, media and communications, sustainability, security and sports competitions.
An important part of the day focused on the sports venues and competition preparations. Representatives of Romania’s national sports federations presented the status of each discipline and the venues where competitions will take place in February 2027:
Poiana Brașov – Alpine skiing
Cheile Grădiștei – biathlon, figure skating, short track and ski mountaineering
Predeal – cross-country skiing and snowboarding
Râșnov – ski jumping
Brașov – men’s ice hockey tournament
Târgu Secuiesc – women’s ice hockey tournament
Sfântu Gheorghe – women’s and men’s 3x3 ice hockey tournaments
The day concluded with the draw for the figure skating judges and a question-and-answer session, giving delegation representatives the opportunity to discuss directly with the organisers the details presented throughout the day.
Florin Mișcă, Deputy Secretary General of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, who coordinates and supports the National Olympic Committees in preparing for and participating in Brașov EYOF 2027, spoke about the first reactions received following the meeting:
“Normally, the Chefs de Mission Seminar takes place approximately three months before the Festival. For Brașov EYOF 2027, this would have meant November. However, the very busy international calendar led us to agree with the EOC to organise the Seminar in September, two months earlier.
“The first reactions from the Coordination Commission and the National Olympic Committees have been very positive. For us, it is important that participants appreciated the way the processes, stages, responsibilities and deadlines were presented.
“It is a positive sign, but also one that requires us to continue working at the same pace. There is still work to be done before February 2027, and this Seminar is important precisely because it allows us to see concretely what works, what needs to be adjusted and what the delegations coming to Brașov expect.”
Tomorrow, discussions will move from the meeting room to the field. The Chefs de Mission and EOC representatives will visit the sports venues where, in less than five months, Europe’s young athletes will compete at Brașov EYOF 2027.
